Budding chemists take top award

Solihull Editorial 28th Sep, 2024   0

BUDDING chemists have been handed their certificates for their part in a demanding Cambridge Chemistry Challenge.

The year 13 pupils, who took on the challenge while in year 12, were presented with their certificates by Principal Martin Sullivan.

The 50 chemists sat the hugely challenging 90-minute paper earlier this year, with 11 young people achieving the Copper award and seven attaining the Silver prize. And one chemist – Anna Bauer – achieved the Gold standard.

Set by a team of university chemists, the competition aims to take Year 12 students significantly beyond their A level syllabus and encourage them to think about science in the way undergraduate students need to at university.

Chemistry curriculum leader, Simon Windsor, said: “I’m proud of all our learners who took on this extremely difficult Cambridge Chemistry Challenge.

“It was entirely voluntary for the students to attempt this competition, but they wanted to challenge themselves with some extremely advanced Chemistry.

“The experience will stand them in good stead for their A level examinations this summer and for their progression onto Higher Education, with many of them considering further study of Chemistry.”
