COMMUNITY-spirited residents have been getting stuck in to help clean their local area throughout March as part of the Great British Spring Clean.
Events took place in support of the National Keep Britain Tidy campaign in Balsall Common, Berkswell, Olton, Olton Jubilee Park, Elmdon Park, Hobs Meadow Woods, Langley Hall Park, Hillfield Park and Dicken’s Heath Village involving an incredible 360 volunteers.
So far an impressive 266 bags of waste has been collected with the most popular items being food and drink packaging, with tyres, cones and signs also found during the spring cleans.
Many community groups took part including The Literary Litter Pickers, Balsall Common Residents Association, Berkswell Society and Dickens Heath Parish Council. In addition Yew Tree School, St Anthony’s School, Dorridge Primary and Haslucks Green Primary schools also got involved.
Coun Tony Dicicco, Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities and Partnerships said: “I would like to say thank you to everyone who supported an event in their area, all volunteers, businesses and groups.
“It is great to give back to your local area and these events really galvanise community spirit.
“I would encourage anyone who has not taken part to attend one of the upcoming events, or even organise their own!”
The Council will continue to support and encourage groups, individuals, schools and local businesses who would like to clean up the litter that can build up across local streets and parks.
Volunteers can be provided with all the necessary equipment such as litter pickers, sacks and vests in order to make sure the clear-ups are a success.
The Council’s Environment Contractor, Amey, is supporting the events by collecting the waste from the organised litter picks.

Future events will be taking place in the following locations:
* Hockley Heath: Friday, April 21 – 10am to 2pm – Meet at Hockley Heath Recreation Ground car park, Old Warwick Road. This event is run in association Hockley Heath Parish Council
* Shirley Town Centre: Saturday, April 29 10am to 12pm – Meet outside Shirley Library, Parkgate Centre. This event is being run in association with Shirley Lions Club.
