BIRMINGHAM Airport has welcomed the first civilian Air Traffic Control Apprentice to its ranks.
Pena Mason joined the scheme after working in various supporting roles within the aviation industry.
She began training with Basic and Aerodrome courses at Global ATS, completing modules, lessons, and simulator sessions.
Back at the airport, Pena started Unit Training, with her tasks regularly reviewed by her Unit Training Manager.
Partnering with Gloucestershire College, Global ATS successfully launched the UK’s first Air Traffic Control apprenticeship scheme in July 2023.
For Birmingham Airport, the success of the apprenticeship scheme has been profound, with a clear desire to continue the progression of candidates through the apprenticeship programme, cultivating the next generation of Air Traffic Controllers.
Pena said: “Not only will I earn my Air Traffic Controllers Officers (ATCO) license and a Level five Diploma at the end of the apprenticeship, but it will also open many doors for my future career within the industry.”
“The ATCO Apprentice Scheme is a major milestone for the industry and will create so many opportunities for future generations of ATCOs.”
Paul Beat, head of air navigation services at Birmingham Airport said: “We are delighted to have been part of the UK’s first Air Traffic Control apprenticeship scheme here at Birmingham Airport.
“Pena has shown commitment and drive throughout the process and is a credit to herself and the Air Traffic Team. We look forward to seeing Pena’s achievements in the future as she advances in her career.”
