Big hearted opticians brings Christmas joy to deserving duo

AN opticians in Chelmsley Wood has been helping to bring some festive cheer for two local residents.

As part of an initiative run by Specsavers, Kenneth Simpson, aged 84, and Harley Draper, five, have both been treated to a special Christmas surprise.

Kenneth, who has been a customer at the store since 2012, recently lost his wife Jean and this will be his first Christmas alone.

Sukhi Drake, store director Specsavers Chelmsley Wood, said: ‘Kenneth and Jean were devoted to each other so our hearts went out to him, knowing this would be his first Christmas on his own.

“As a keen gardener we thought it would be nice to treat Kenneth to a garden centre voucher for £100 and hopefully give him a little something to smile about.”

A delighted Kenneth said: “This was a lovely surprise. The team at Specsavers have always been supportive, but this time they’ve really gone the extra mile.”

Harley first visited Specsavers Chelmsley Wood when he was struggling at school due to poor vision.

The store fitted him with some specs and he’s since been doing much better.

“Harley comes in to store every few weeks for adjustments on his glasses and he is one of the most well behaved, polite and well-mannered little boys,” said Suhki.

“We know he’s a fan of superhero toys so we’ve gifted him a £150 toy store voucher so he can buy his favourites.”

Neil Draper, Harley’s dad said; ‘We were really surprised to find out Harley had been nominated and would be receiving a gift.

“We’re often in store and they are always so helpful, it’s great to have that personal service.

“Harley is delighted and can’t wait to add to his superhero collection!”
