Benefit claimants could get help to cover rent costs

Solihull Editorial 10th Dec, 2021   0

SILHILLIANS who receive Housing Benefit or Universal Credit (Housing Costs element) could get help to cover rent costs.

Solihull Council said the Discretionary Housing Payments Scheme (DHP) is designed to help residents where their Housing Benefit or Universal Credit (Housing Costs element) does not cover the rent.

In addition to making up rent shortfalls, the scheme can also be used to help with a one-off cost, such as covering outstanding rent, a rent deposit or moving costs.

Before making an application residents are advised to refer to the DHP information sheet to check their eligibility.

Councillor Bob Sleigh, cabinet member for Resources, said: “The past few years have been extremely challenging for many residents, and as we enter the winter period, Solihull Council is especially keen to signpost the help available to those living in the borough.

“I’m delighted that we’re once again offering eligible residents access to Discretionary Housing Payments, to ensure that no one in receipt of Housing Benefit or Universal Credit (Housing Costs element) is left struggling to pay the rent this year.

“I encourage residents to check their eligibility and apply for the scheme as soon as possible.”
