YOUNGSTERS revved up their handmade engines for a mini motor challenge in Kenilworth.

Pupils from Kenilworth’s Crackey Hall, St Augustine’s, Priors Field, and Balsall Common Primary School, were pitted against each other in a bid to reach the National Final of the Jaguar Primary School Challenge.

The challenge involved designing and building the fastest model car possible using real engineering processes and then racing them down a 20 metre track, set up in Princethorpe College sports hall. The cars propelled by compressed air gas canisters went the distance in a matter of seconds.

The Silver Sprinters from Priors Field lived up to their name with their mini motor pipping their peers to the post. They were followed by Sonic Speed from Balsall Common and Storm from Crackley Hall respectively. The fastest car title was awarded to Lightning Sparks from Balsall Common.

Both first and second placed teams will go forward to represent Warwickshire in the National Finals on June 22 at the British Motor Museum in Gaydon.

Judge chairman Alex Darkes said: “The standard of competition of all the teams this year was again tremendously high, illustrating the commitment and talent of all the children involved. These nine-year- olds explain aerodynamics and friction with a level of knowledge and understanding I would be pleased to see in a GCSE student.”
