Average speed cameras and more pedestrian crossings on agenda for A41

Solihull Editorial 5th Sep, 2024   0

AVERAGE speed cameras and extra pedestrian crossings are on the agenda to improve road safety on the A41.

The measures, among others, were set to be discussed at a Environment and Infrastructure meeting tonight (Thursday).

Documents released ahead of the meeting recommended these were put forward to residents in a public consultation as well as a campaign reminding motorists to stay within the 30mph speed limit.

This comes after Solihull Council was handed £1.265million in Government funding to enhance road safety on the A41.

The documents revealed the scheme initally focused on the A41 from Birmingham City Centre to Solihull Town Centre but due to conflicting priorities, Birmingham City Council were unable to meet the Department for Transport’s required timescale and therefore the Solihull section of the route has been progressed independently.

In a statement Councillor, Wazma Qais said the speed of traffic along this section of the Warwick Road has been a concern for several years and the introduction of three mobile camera enforcement sites has not had a significant impact on driver behaviours.

The Sihill ward Councillor said the project will reduce the risk of people being killed or seriously injured as a result of a road traffic collision occurring on the A41 Warwick Road. In addition, congestion will be reduced, as well as carbon emissions from stationary motor vehicles.

He added: “The funding awarded the council by the last government will enable safety improvements to be delivered along the A41 corridor in Solihull, together with long term road safety benefits.

“I support the recommendations, especially the introduction of Average Speed Cameras, and together with ward colleagues, I will work with local residents and businesses to help ensure our roads are even safer.”

Councillor Ken cabinet member for Environment and Infrastructure said: “I applaud council officers who successfully bid for this additional funding.

“Our officers have provided some suggestions as to what the funding can bring to make the A41 even safer but engagement with residents, local businesses and stakeholders are important before we move forwards.”
