Armed Forces Day flag flies in Shirley Park

THE ARMED Forces Day flag was raised in honour of veterans and serving military personnel at the at the war memorial in Shirley Park.

The flag raising ceremony was held on Monday (June 24) in recognition of those who fight or have fought for their country, to show support and appreciation for their service.

The flag raising ceremony saw visitors and dignitaries watch the chairman of the Shirley Royal British Legion (RBL) and Solihull Mayor, Councillor Shahin Ashraf, raise the Armed Forces Day flag at the memorial in the park.

This was followed by a one minute silence and a blessing from the Chaplain.

Armed Forces Day takes place on the last Saturday of June every year, falling this year on June 29.

There is a week of celebrations leading up to Armed Forces Day to support and honour the Armed Forces community, from currently serving personnel to service families, veterans and cadets.




The Mayor of Solihull said: “It is a privilege for me to raise the flag to honour Armed Forces Day this year.

“This day is a special opportunity to recognise all Armed Forces personnel – not only the brave servicemen and women who are serving now, but the veterans, cadets, reserve troops and service families who have all made sacrifices to protect and serve their country.


“As conflicts and wars continue to devastate communities around the world, it remains crucial that we show our gratitude and appreciation for our Armed Forces as they promote peace and deliver aid. I am honoured to be a part of this year’s event.”

Ken Russell, branch chairman of Shirley RBL, said: “I would like to thank the Mayor and all our visitors for honouring Armed Forces Day with us today at our flag raising ceremony.

“This is a special opportunity for us all to show appreciation and support for the men and women who fight and have fought for this country.”
