Acocks Green nursing home to close its doors

AN ACOCKS Green Nursing Home – which failed to give medication and administered wrong doses of antibiotics to residents under the noses of Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspectors last year – is set to close its doors due to a shortage of nurses.

The Warwick Road home, which went into administration at the end of December 2015, is set to close in the next four to six weeks.

But before calling time on the home Orchard Care Homes, the group overseeing the closure will ensure that up to 56 residents, some who have been there for more than 18 years, have been found suitable accommodation elsewhere.

Over the years both temporary and long-term care has been provided for the elderly and those with dementia, physical disabilities.

In May 2015 the CQC conducted an unannounced inspection of the care home and rated the home as ‘Requires Improvement.’

Inspectors noted: “One person had only been given their antibiotic once instead of three times a day as prescribed.

“The Medicine Administration Records did not identify the correct times of administration although it had been checked by a second member of staff.”

The report also notes a second person had not received their prescribed medicines for four days because they were not available but once the management had been made aware steps were taken to make sure they had their medicines on the same day.

It also stated during the inspection detailed instructions were not clearly available to enable nursing staff to know how to give people their prescribed medicines covertly.

Inspectors also noted that residents said the services were safe and residents weren’t left waiting for a member of staff when they pressed their buzzer when they needed attention.

While inspectors were at the care home they saw residents were supported to keep in contact with friends and family and planned activities for residents which were advertised took part as per the timetable.

A spokesperson for Acocks Green Nursing Home said: “The home has been in administration since the end of December 2015.

“There is a chronic shortage of nurses both nationally and locally and it is not viable to run this home as a nursing home.

“We appreciate this will be a difficult time for residents, relatives and staff, and are working closely with all of these parties and the Clinical Commissioning Group, to ensure a smooth transition of residents to new homes, and to support staff in finding alternative positions.”
