A CALLOUS burglar who ransacked a pensioner’s home while she enjoyed a shopping trip with her daughter is back behind bars after Police found him hiding under his girlfriend’s bed.
Aron Thompson trashed the house in Fox Hollies Road, Acocks Green, after breaking in but was disturbed when the 71-year-old woman returned home.
He fled with cash and games consoles but abandoned other items, including a TV that he’d stashed by the back door, in his haste to flee the property.
The next day officers patrolling in Kestral Avenue, Yardley, spotted a Kia Sportage stolen from outside another home in Fox Hollies Road.
Enquiries revealed that Thompson’s girlfriend lived nearby – and when officers paid her a visit they found the 29-year-old hiding under a bed.
An image on a mobile phone seized from Thompson pictured him standing beside the stolen Kia Sportage, while a body warmer was also recovered that matched the one CCTV showed the thief wearing during the break-in.
A baseball bat, screwdriver and stolen property were later found inside the stolen car.
Thompson – who has nine burglary convictions to his name stretching back to 2006 – admitted burglary and handling stolen goods and at Birmingham Crown Court and was jailed for four years.
Investigating officer, PC Alan Reeves, said: “The elderly victim in this case was badly affected by the break-in having seen it in progress and the mess Thompson left behind; she actually received hospital treatment due to the stress and anxiety it left her with.
“Residents can sleep easier knowing Thompson is again behind bars – and upon his eventual release he will be robustly monitored by our offender management teams.”
