A45 to close in Solihull to install footbridge

Solihull Editorial 6th Apr, 2022   0

THE A45 in Solihull will close when a footbridge is installed as part of a £282million upgrade to M42 Junction 6.

The new crossing point means people will be able to walk and cycle above the busy A45 between Clock Interchange and Junction 6 near the Arden Hotel.

The 92-tonne bridge – spanning almost 60metres – is set to be lowered into position on the evening of April 30.

National Highways say the A45 will start to close to traffic from 4pm on April 30 and will be fully re-open by 9.30am on May 1.

During the work, the A45 will be closed with a diversion route in place via Bickenhill Lane and the A452.

National Highways programme lead, Anita Prashar, said: “We’re keen to make sure that this scheme benefits the local community as well as motorists and the new footbridge will make crossing the A45 much safer and easier for pedestrians and cyclists.

“To ensure the safety of our workforce doing the work, we will need to close the A45 in both directions and we’ve planned this work carefully to ensure we can keep disruption to a minimum.”

Once complete, National Highways say the project will support development by improving access to HS2, the NEC, Birmingham Airport and future developments such as UK Central Solihull.

As part of the upgrade, National Highways is building a new 2.4km dual carriageway link road, aligned to the west of Bickenhill,

a new junction (5a) on the M42 motorway and two new roundabouts north of the B4102 Solihull Road on either side of the M42 motorway.
