A SLICE of cake and a glass of sherry – that’s the secret for a long and happy life according to a 101-year-old.

Audrey Owen, known as Bunty, celebrated her birthday in style with a personalised cat-themed chocolate cake surrounded by her loved ones and team members at Blossomfield Grange on Worcester Way, where she lives.

When asked for her secret to a rewarding life, Bunty said: “Having a great family around me…along with a slice of cake and a glass of sherry.”

Bunty was born in Liverpool but spent most of her childhood in Beaumaris on the Isle of Anglesey.

She attended Beaumaris Grammar School and remembers practising drills during the second world war and the time she spent sheltering in the castle tunnels with her classmates.

It was during this time her family opened their home to evacuees from Liverpool.

After her schooling years, Bunty worked as a receptionist at the local Bulkeley Arms Hotel in Anglesey.

Bunty lived around the corner from Len, whom she took a shine to and went on to marry at St Nicholas Church.

The couple relocated to Solihull in 1947, where they raised four children, Janet, Peter, Vernon and Juliet.

After relocating to Solihull, she regularly visited Beaumaris, often for three months over the summer with her family.

In her past time, she also enjoyed knitting and often stitched clothes for her family including her four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Jo Hopkins, customer relations manager at Blossomfield Grange, said: “It was lovely celebrating this very special milestone. Bunty is a much-loved resident here and marking her birthday was a joy, especially surprising her with the bespoke cake.

“Perhaps we should take her advice on board and indulge in a slice of cake and a glass of sherry from time to time – cheers to Bunty!”
