139 fines issued for coronavirus restrictions breaches in West Midlands after Easter weekend

POLICE in the West Midlands have issued 139 fines for breaches of social distancing rules during the coronavirus restrictions.

In Warwickshire, the figure is just five so far.

Fines of £60 can be issued to those who fail to comply with officers after they have explained the risks to public health and encouraged voluntary compliance.

In total, 3203 fines were issued across England up to and including the Easter weekend (Monday, April 13).

Figures reveal 82 per cent of the fines have been issued to men, and 15 per cent to women, with 3 per cent unknown.

A third of fines have gone to those aged 18-24, with a third to those aged 25-34.

West Midlands Chief Constable Dave Thompson said: “Across our towns and cities in the West Midlands, we have seen most local people complying with the government’s restrictions and staying at home to save lives.

“My officers have taken every opportunity to speak to people who are out and about and explain why they should return home and, in the vast majority of cases, people have listened and acted positively on the advice.

“To everyone who is playing their part and staying at home, I would like to say a huge thank you and keep up the great work because you are doing the right thing to keep yourselves, your family and your friends safe.

“A small minority have flouted the restrictions and we have had to resort to enforcement. We are dealing with the new legislation proportionately and it is only being used as a last resort where a few individuals have refused to co-operate despite our best efforts.

“The government restrictions are the most substantial we have ever seen in this country’s history.

“My officers remain on the streets 24 hours a day to support you at this difficult time and to cut crime and keep people safe. We are playing our part, please continue to play yours.”
