Why Doctor Led Weight Care Matters More Than Ever
The way we approach weight loss is changing. With the rise of online providers and increasing access to treatments such as GLP 1 medications, more people than ever are seeking support to improve their health. But alongside this shift, an important question is being asked: where is the medical care in all of this?
For Dr Nadia Ahmad this question became the foundation for building The Weight Care Clinic.
The Weight Care Clinic is a doctor led, CQC registered service offering medical weight management alongside private GP care. It was created in response to a growing gap in the market, where patients were accessing powerful treatments but often without the clinical oversight, guidance, or follow up needed to use them safely and effectively.
“Patients were being given medication, but not care,” Dr Nadia explains. “They had questions, side effects, uncertainty, and no one to turn to. That is where things can go wrong.”
The clinic was built to do things differently.
Every patient begins with a full medical assessment, ensuring that any treatment plan is appropriate, safe, and tailored to the individual. Where medication is prescribed, it is done so within a structured framework, with clear dosing plans, regular follow up, and ongoing doctor support.
But the approach goes far beyond prescribing.
With a background in medicine and medicinal chemistry, the clinic focuses on understanding how treatments work within the body, allowing for more personalised care and better long term outcomes. Patients are not placed on generic plans, but supported based on their biology, lifestyle, and wider health.
Weight, after all, is never just about weight.
Patients are supported holistically, with guidance on nutrition, lifestyle, and behavioural changes, alongside medical treatment. The aim is not simply short term results, but sustainable improvements in health, energy, confidence, and overall wellbeing.
One of the most important, and often overlooked, aspects of this journey is what happens after the weight is lost.
Maintenance is where many patients struggle, particularly when support is removed too early. At The Weight Care Clinic, this phase is built into the model of care from the beginning.
Patients are guided through a structured maintenance phase once they reach their target or a clinically appropriate weight. This may involve gradual dose adjustments, continued treatment where appropriate, and regular check ins to ensure stability. The focus shifts from weight loss to maintaining results safely, preventing regain, and building habits that last.
It is this continuity of care that many patients say has been missing from other services.
One patient described feeling completely alone while using weight loss medication before joining the clinic. “I had no idea if what I was experiencing was normal,” she said. “There was no one to ask.” After transferring, she felt supported and reassured, with a clear plan in place and regular follow up. Importantly, she was also guided through maintenance, something she had not previously considered.
Another patient, navigating weight changes during menopause, spoke about the difference of finally being understood. Her care was tailored around hormonal changes and realistic expectations, leading not only to weight loss, but improvements in sleep, mood, and overall quality of life, with a long term plan to maintain those results.
Behind the scenes, the clinic is supported by a growing multidisciplinary team. Dr Talha Malik, GP and Clinical Lead, ensures high standards of clinical care and governance across all patient pathways. Elly Herriman, Clinic Operations and Patient Experience Lead, plays a central role in delivering a smooth, supportive journey for every patient, from first contact through to ongoing care.
Alongside weight management, the clinic also offers a wide range of private GP services, including general consultations, blood tests and reviews, women’s health support, fertility and preconception care, men’s health, and management of common concerns such as fatigue, digestive issues, and sleep disturbances.
This integrated approach allows patients to access comprehensive care in one place, without the need to navigate multiple services.
Currently operating remotely across the UK, The Weight Care Clinic is also preparing to open a physical clinic space. This next step reflects both patient demand and a long term vision to provide accessible, doctor led care in a professional, welcoming environment, while maintaining the flexibility of remote access.
In a market where quick fixes and unregulated services are becoming increasingly common, the clinic offers something different. A focus on safety. A commitment to evidence-based care. And a belief that patients deserve more than just a prescription.
They deserve to be looked after.
For Dr Nadia, the mission is simple: to bring medicine back into weight care, and to ensure that every patient feels supported, understood, and safe throughout their journey.
