What is the Melbourne Film Festival?

All filmmakers in the world can compete at the Melbourne Film Festival. Whether you have several films to your name or are a first-time director, you can always take part in this event. All the films participating in the festival are premiere films. One of the conditions for submitting a project is that the film must not have been released before. This is not a festival you go to if you want to see famous films. That does not mean, however, that the films will not be of unprecedented quality.

Films can compete in different categories. Short films have a maximum duration of 40 minutes and 29 seconds, including credits. MIFF’s short film competition is recognized by the Hollywood Academy, the BAFTA and the AACTA. Winners of the top prizes are even eligible for an Oscar.

Feature Films are films that last at least 40 minutes and 30 seconds, including credits. A feature film can be a documentary or fiction. This year, the annual MIFF Film Competition will begin, making this Australian film festival the only one in the Southern Hemisphere with all the key components of major international film festivals. The A$140,000 prize is provided by the Government of Victoria, which is keen to invest in emerging filmmaking talent.

Episodic content is the category for series of several episodes. There is not a minimum or maximum number of episodes, nor is there a set duration for each episode. However, all episodes must be submitted at the same time.

Films in competition can be International or Australian productions. There are three conditions for a production to be considered as Australian. At least half of all production and development funding comes from Australian sources, at least half of the post-production work is done in Australia, and/or at least half of the film is shot in Australia. This criteria must be demonstrable to the organization, otherwise the film will ultimately fall under international films.

Visitors and activities

The Melbourne film festival is held for 17 days and attracts around 200,000 visitors annually. It is the perfect place for filmmakers, producers, film distributors and other film industry insiders to network. There are also several lectures and workshops for those who are interested.
