Love blossoms in The York Realist at Leamington's Loft Theatre

LOVE blossoms in The York Realist at Leamington’s Loft Theatre.

Peter Gill’s play is set against the background of the York Mystery Plays – a cycle of 14th century plays covering sacred history from the creation to the Last Judgement – that are still regularly performed in York by a mixture of amateur and professional players.

It is here that two young men from very different backgrounds meet and fall in love. George is a farm worker, living with his mother in a tied cottage. John is a cosmopolitan assistant director based in London.

But their love story is beset by difficulties. Not only are they from very different backgrounds, they also have different attitudes to their own sexuality, and they are living in the 1960s when homosexuality is still illegal.

Director Martin Cosgrif said: “This gently evocative play demands considerable insight and sensitivity from its performers.

“‘It is both funny and a deeply touching reflection on the rival forces of family, class and longing.”

The production runs from June 12 to 22.
