NO MATTER how old you are, there is something about Disney that brings out the magic of childhood.

Imagine then 65 favourite Disney characters on the ice rink set against the backdrop of a magical castle, and the result will not only take your breath away but also leave you singing and dancing along.

Hundreds of children – and adults – excitedly arrived at the Birmingham NIA dressed as their favourite Disney hero, princess or character as Disney On Ice returned to the city to celebrate 100 years of magic.

Mickey and Minnie lead audiences on an action-packed whizz through some of Disney’s most celebrated films.

The duo alongside Goofy and Donald were in the party spirit all evening especially after Mickey got down on one knee and proposed to his sweetheart.

The superb dancers showcased mesmerising scenes from boxoffice smashes Toy Story and Finding Nemo which the young fans squealed with delight to, while Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid were brought to life again for those of us who remember singing along to it on video in the early 90s.

Even grandparents will have taken a trip down memory lane watching Pinocchio and Geppetto try to find their way out of a huge whale – cleverly constructed and brilliantly executed on the ice.

Even some of the films which, while clearly popular at the time of release – Mulan and Pocahontas to name two – but never really made it to the dizzying heights of The Lion King, reminded the audience that over the years even without the talents of Tim Rice and Elton John, Disney have produced some cracking songs for their films.

The finale saw fireworks explode while all the characters took to the stage for the grand parade as children waved and cheered fanatically.

It was clear from this show and the amazement two 20-somethings were left in why everyone young and old will always have happy memories of Disney on ice.

From Finding Nemo to Pinocchio take to the ice at the NIA.
