Companies are using smart storage to boost business in Birmingham, here’s how

Correspondent 17th Mar, 2026   0

Businesses across Birmingham are starting to rethink how they manage space, as rising commercial rents and the continued growth of online retail push companies to find smarter, more flexible ways to store their stock.

Instead of relying on one traditional option, many are now mixing and matching different options depending on what their business needs. From self-storage units to box-by-box services and full warehouse fulfilment, the range of options available to small and medium-sized businesses has expanded significantly over the past few years, and more companies are beginning to take advantage of that.

The cost of storing stock

For many businesses, storage has become one of the biggest costs after staffing.

Commercial rents have climbed in recent years, and committing to larger premises can be a real gamble, especially for companies whose sales rise and fall throughout the year.

As a result, more businesses are separating their office and storage space altogether. They operate from smaller, more affordable offices while keeping stock somewhere else, which allows them to stay lean without limiting how much they can hold.

Self-storage units are one of the most common options. In Birmingham, prices typically start at around £8 to £13 per week for a smaller 25 square foot unit, rising to £30 to £50 or more per week for spaces between 100 and 160 square feet. For many small businesses looking for flexibility without committing to a long commercial lease, it can be a practical and relatively affordable solution.

A newer model gains ground

Alongside traditional self-storage, a newer approach has been gaining traction, particularly among online retailers in Birmingham. Storage by the box allows businesses to pay only for the space their inventory actually takes up. Boxes are collected from a business, stored securely off-site, and returned when needed.

For ecommerce companies whose stock levels rise and fall throughout the year, and for those running companies from home offices or shared workspaces, the convenience and cost efficiency of this model is proving attractive.

Warehousing and fulfilment for growing businesses

Bigger businesses are still relying on traditional warehouses, and demand for industrial space across the West Midlands remains very strong. In fact, in early 2025 there were around nine million square feet of requirements for large logistics units across the region, much of it driven by growing ecommerce companies looking for places to store and move their products.

And with prices from £7 to £9 per square foot, it’s still cost effective for many businesses.

But modern warehouses do far more than simply hold stock. Many now handle the entire fulfilment process, from picking and packing orders to dispatching them directly to customers.

For businesses dealing with a high number of online orders each day, having a logistics partner manage this side of things can make life a lot easier and free up time to focus on growing the business.

Birmingham’s role as a logistics hub

Birmingham has long been one of the UK’s key business hubs, largely thanks to its central location and strong transport links. Because of that, the city continues to attract investment from logistics companies and developers who are expanding warehouse space across the wider region.

At the same time, businesses are starting to focus more on urban logistics sites that allow them to deliver into city centres much faster. With online shopping now such a big part of everyday life, companies are under pressure to move goods quickly and efficiently.

Researchers have also pointed out that Birmingham’s ecommerce sector is maturing.

Instead of simply trying to grow sales, many businesses are now concentrating on improving speed, efficiency and sustainability. That means investing in stronger logistics networks, smarter storage solutions and systems that help them meet the increasingly high expectations of online customers.

Storage as a strategic decision

Perhaps the biggest change is how businesses now think about storage. It’s no longer just a practical problem to solve as cheaply as possible. For many companies, storage has become a decision that plays a role in how they operate and how they plan for growth.

Whether that means using a local storage unit, storing stock box by box, or working with a third-party fulfilment centre, businesses in Birmingham are realising that the way they manage storage can have a real impact on efficiency, costs and ultimately their bottom line.
