FOOTBALL - Knowle battle to Central Ajax win to remain top of table

MATTHEW Seeley admitted it was far from his side’s best performance after 10-man Knowle battled to a 4-2 win against Central Ajax.

The Robins raced into a two-goal lead courtesy of early strikes from Odane Barnes and Zak Parsons before Tom Craine and Lewis Clarke eventually sealed the points at the Draintech Stadium.

Knowle lost Joseph Drake-Cervantes to a red card late on and Seeley felt his side lacked discipline after twice allowing Ajax back into the game although the Robins remain top of the Midland Football League Division Two table.

Seeley said: “We came out the blocks really well, we flew into a two-nil lead, we took control of the game and it was brilliant.

“No disrespect to Ajax, they were really organised, we made more of a game of it than we should, we didn’t do the basics right after 25 minutes and got caught out massively from a counter attack.

“It got a little sloppy and we were doing stuff we shouldn’t do and getting ourselves into all kinds of trouble.

“We nicked a goal against the run of play but our half time team talk about discipline and executing the gameplan fell on deaf ears.

“We made the same mistakes for the penalty and it brought them straight back into it.

“We got the three points but it’s far from our best performance, there’s a bit to work on.”

The home side took the lead on early on when Barnes tapped home from close range after Sam Kirby could only parry Parsons’ initial effort.

And the Robins struck again on seven minutes as Parsons finished from 12-yards out from Craine’s pass.

However, Ajax reduced the deficit when Jordan Lewis pounced to turn home a rebound after Craig Johnson kept out an initial shot.

Knowle restored their two-goal lead courtesy of Craine’s fine solo effort before Steven Ruck netted from the penalty spot for Ajax after the break.

However, the home side eventually sealed the points as Clarke headed in from a free-kick before Drake-Cervantes received a straight red card late on for a reckless challenge.

Knowle are next in action against Silhill in the Les James Challenge Cup on Saturday, September 7 with kick-off at 3pm at the Draintech Stadium.
