ANDY Whing praised an ‘outstanding’ performance from his side after Solihull Moors claimed their first win of the season with an impressive 2-1 victory at Ebbsfleet United.

Matty Warburton’s brace, his first two goals for Moors, proved decisive despite Greg Cundle reducing the deficit for Fleet at Kuflink Stadium.

The victory was Moors first in the National League this season and Whing was full of praise for his players after a hard-fought win on the road.

Whing said: “I’m absolutely delighted with the application, effort and intensity on and off the ball, we controlled the game and forced them into errors.

“The first goal was absolutely outstanding, they haven’t opened us up all game, we knew it was going to be tough, we were outstanding, it was a proper away team performance.

“It’s looking promising, the subs really changed the game last week and deserved their chance and the subs again brought experience and helped us.

“It was a really physical game, we stood up to it and we played good football when we had to as well.”

Moors went close to an opener midway through the first half when Joe Newton’s effort hit the post and bounced to safety.

And Solihull broke the deadlock on 39 minutes as Warburton headed home debutant Jay Benn’s cross to hand Whing’s side a deserved lead.

The home side almost drew level at the start of the second period as Tommy Simkin made a superb save to keep out Omari Sterling-James’ fierce shot.

However, Moors doubled their lead on 53 minutes when Warburton tapped in from close range after Mark Cousins could only parry Jack Stevens’ shot into the scorer’s path.

Ebbsfleet halved the deficit on 73 minutes as Cundle turned home Darren McQueen’s cross moments after the latter had hit the post.

The visitors survived several nervous minutes as Ebbsfleet wasted a couple of late chances to ensure Moors went home with the points.

Solihull are next in action away at Boreham Wood on Wednesday, August 16 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Meadow Park.
