THE Red Lion in Shirley has temporarily called last orders for a major refurbishment.
The Stratford Road pub closed its doors on Monday, October 4, ahead of a £350,000 revamp which will also see a name change.
The grand reopening of The Lion Sport and Eat is scheduled for early December and the owners say around 30 jobs will be created as a result.
The investment is being undertaken by Heineken-owned Star Pubs and Bars and Solihull residents Nick Johnson and Mark Caldicott.
The duo also run the award-winning Bulls Head at Barston, and their families were both regulars of The Red Lion.
The project will not only give the outside a lick of paint but also look to transform a courtyard at the back of the pub into a covered 32-seater alfresco space complete with big screen.
Inside they are adding a new kitchen, coffee machines and a dedicated games room which will be available for hire.
Nick said: “Shirley is a really vibrant town, and we feel incredibly fortunate to have found a pub here.
“We both have a real affection for The Lion having known it all our lives. It’s a Shirley institution, and there’s been lots of interest in its future.
“Whilst other buildings in the middle of town have been upgraded, The Lion has been left behind and stands out.
“We want to give it the TLC and investment it needs to be an asset to Shirley once again.
“We’re aiming to provide something for everyone, whether they are after a family lunch, an afternoon coffee or a great night out.”
