AFC Solihull resume their place at the MFL Division 3 summit

AFC SOLIHULL regained top spot in MFL Division 3 after coming from behind to beat Coventrians 4-1.

Jon Hamer and Joel Hughes both went close with their efforts for the hosts, whilst Coventrians’ Lewis Chester brushed the post with a strike.

Chester made sure his next chance found the back of the net though, firing a rebound after two previous efforts from Nathan McGarrity were kept out, netting his 30th of the season in the process.

The hosts were level within a minute though, after a long ball forward evaded the Coventrians defence, and with captain Arron Cheshire stumbling over, he inexplicably caught the ball and gifted Solihull a penalty.

Andy Matthews duly put away the spot-kick to level.

Solihull almost had a second penalty just five minutes later, when Hughes was pulled down in the area, whilst midfielder Lee Savings headed two chances wide.

McGaritty’s stunning strike from distance had to be well kept out by AFC keeper Dan Wright, as the scores remained level at the break.

An offside flag denied Matthews what he thought was a second go-ahead goal, when he rolled the ball home following a corner, before Solihull did re-take the lead through Ste Mason’s backheel during a goalmouth scramble.

Coventrians were reduced to ten men shortly after, Aaron Donaldson going in with a studs-up challenge that resulted in a straight red.

Hughes played in Hamer who slammed home the third, before Wright’s punt upfield to Matthews was slotted home for his 20th of the season and a vital three points for Solihull.
