A FORMER president and chairman of Dorridge Cricket Club spent the day at Lord’s as a special guest of the MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club).

John Wright, from Dorridge, was voted as an MCC community cricket hero earlier this year.

Wright was recognised for his work as project manager and grounds team volunteer at Dorridge.

And MCC president Lord Mervyn King invited Wright to Lord’s with the latter one of 11 community cricket heroes identified following a month-long search by MCC and The Cricketer magazine.

Wright said: “[On being recognised] Very, very special on both counts.

“To receive such recognition for doing something I enjoy is really the icing on the cake.

“As a cricket lover, Lord’s has always been a special venue for me so to see behind the scenes and to be made so welcome made it a day I will never forget.

“Grassroots cricket is the life blood of the game.

“We all enjoy the success of the England team, but it takes its origins from cricket clubs around the country.

“Even for those who don’t play competitively, there is a wealth of competitive sport for those of all ages that will in all probability build friendships that last a lifetime.

“The growth in women and girls’ cricket in recent years has helped to expand this wellbeing across the community, may it continue to flourish as I’ve no doubt it will.”

Former Dorridge chairman Wright initiated the creation of a second ground and pavilion at the club. This was done to address a shortage of cricket facilities in the region.

He also helped install solar panels and arranged for 200 trees to be planted around the ground.

Wright’s environmental efforts saw Dorridge win the Warwickshire Cricket Foundation’s ‘Tackling Climate Change’ award in 2024.
