WARWICKSHIRE and England all-rounder Chris Woakes has retired from international cricket after missing out on a place in the Ashes squad.

Woakes played in 62 test matches, 122 one-day internationals and 33 T20 games for England after making his debut for his country in 2011.

The 36-year-old helped England win the 50-over World Cup in 2019 and the T20 World Cup in 2022.

Overall he represented England in 217 matches, taking 396 wickets which includes eight five-wicket hauls.

He also scored 3,705 runs, including an international career high of 137 not out against India.

In a statement posted on social media, Woakes said: “Playing for England was something I aspired to do since I was a kid dreaming in the back garden, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have lived out those dreams.

“Representing England, wearing the Three Lions and sharing the field with team-mates over the last 15 years, many of whom have become lifelong friends, are things I’ll look back on with the greatest pride.

“Making my debut in 2011 in Australia seems like yesterday, but time flies when you’re having fun.

“Lifting two World Cups and being part of some amazing Ashes series is something I never thought was possible, and those memories and celebrations with my team-mates will stay with me forever.

“I look forward to continuing to play county cricket and exploring more franchise opportunities in the near future.”

Woakes made headlines during England’s test series against India earlier this year, his last act in an England shirt.

The all-rounder came out to bat with his left arm in a sling despite suffering from a suspected dislocated shoulder.

He failed to earn a place in England’s 16-man Ashes squad with England to play Australia this winter.

Warwickshire CEO, Stuart Cain added: “Chris has been a great servant to his country and everyone at Warwickshire is immensely proud of all his achievements.

“He has had a phenomenal career, winning the biggest prizes the game has to offer while always representing England with class.

“We are talking with him about his future in the county game and hope to make an announcement shortly.

“While his time in an England shirt has come to an end, Chris can be proud of everything he has achieved and the way he has represented himself.

“Hopefully this will continue whilst wearing the Bear and Ragged Staff.”
