THE 44TH EDITION of the Peter McEvoy Trophy will take place at Copt Heath Golf Club on April 24 and 25.

This year’s event carries special significance as it will be the first held since the passing of its namesake, Peter McEvoy OBE, who died last week at the age of 72 following a long illness.

A towering figure in amateur golf, McEvoy became the first British amateur to make the cut at the Masters in 1978.

He also won back-to-back Amateur Championships in 1977 and 1978 and captained Great Britain and Ireland to Walker Cup victories in 1999 and 2001.

His lifelong commitment to nurturing young talent led to the establishment of the Peter McEvoy Trophy in 1981, hosted annually at his home club, Copt Heath.

In tribute to his enduring legacy, McEvoy’s son will attend to close the tournament on the final day, honouring his father’s spirit and dedication to the sport.

Tournament director, Ian Davidson said: “This year’s competition will be particularly poignant, coming so soon after Peter’s passing.

“His remarkable enthusiasm for amateur golf has been an inspiration for us all, and we are once again looking forward to a great display of golf from a very strong field.”

The Peter McEvoy Trophy has been a launching pad for many of the UK’s finest golfers.

Notably, Justin Rose, the 1998 champion, who narrowly missed adding another major title to his resume recently at the 2025 Masters.

Rose finished as runner-up after a dramatic play-off against Rory McIlroy, who secured his first Green Jacket and completed the career Grand Slam.

As the tournament approaches, the golfing community prepares to honour Peter McEvoy’s legacy and witness the emergence of the next generation of champions.

Fans and media alike are also set to attend the event at Copt Heath Golf Club, in the wake of the passing of their legendary homegrown talent.
