BIRMINGHAM and Solihull Bees overturned a 21-point deficit to claim a stunning 26-21 bonus point victory against Claverdon.

The home side raced into a 21-point lead after just 17 minutes before Harry Garratt and Ali Cook dotted down for the Bees to close the gap to nine points at the break at Ossetts Hole Lane.

And tries from Jake Wright and Cameron May completed a sensational turnaround while the Bees defended with 14-men for the final quarter of the game.

The result means Solihull sit sixth in the Counties 2 Midlands West (East) table.

Bees director of rugby, Lou Lupoli said: “I have watched many many games over the years and seen some brilliant games, but this set of players can be extremely happy with being part of a historic victory that spectators will talk about for years, it was simply brilliant.”

In the absence of skipper Joe Davies, Adam Trombley captained the Bees having progressed through the club’s mini and junior ranks.

The Bees welcomed back a number of players including Mason Dhani-Ali, Calum Antonio, PJ Hatch and Wright.

However, the home side made a blistering start and scored three quickfire tries which left Solihull with a mountain to climb just past the quarter-hour mark.

The Bees responded well as Garratt crossed in the corner before Cook dotted down off the back of a driving maul as Will Heath added the conversion.

Claverdon lost a player to the sin-bin before the end of the first half while the Bees also saw two tries disallowed.

And Solihull made the perfect start to the second period as Wright broke through to score under the posts and Heath kicked the extras.

Claverdon rallied to put the visitors under pressure only for the Bees to launch a break up the pitch as May scored the away side’s bonus point try from 30-metres out.

The Bees then lost Shane McDermott and Cook to yellow cards in the final quarter as Solihull defended valiantly to see the game out and secure the points.

Birmingham and Solihull Bees are next in action against Coventry Welsh on Saturday, March 1 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Burbages Lane.
