MIDLANDS Hurricanes suffered their heaviest defeat of the season after they were thrashed 66-0 by Oldham on a difficult afternoon in Greater Manchester.
Oldham ran in 12 tries at the Vestacare Stadium as Robbie Butterworth, Jordan Andrade and Joe Hartley all touched down twice for the home side.
And further scores from Dane Windrow, James Thornton, Owen Restall, Connor Carr, Calvin Wellington and
Martyn Ridyard, who also kicked nine conversions, completed a comprehensive win for the Roughyeds.
The result leaves the Hurricanes in eighth place in the Betfred League 1 table as the club had a day to forget as they rounded off the first half of the season.
Hurricanes competed well in the first quarter of the game, conceding just one try to Butterworth, before Hayden Freeman saw an effort chalked off for a forward pass in the build up.
However, a devastating second quarter swung the balance firmly in Oldham’s favour with tries from Windrow, Thornton, Andrade and Restall handing the home side a commanding half time lead.
And any hopes of a Hurricanes fightback after the break were stifled in the first set of the half as Butterworth scored his second try of the afternoon.
Further tries from Carr, Andrade, Hartley twice, Wellington and Whittel saw Oldham pass the 60-point mark and ensured Hurricanes failed to score a single point in a league fixture for the first time this season.
The Midlands side ended the game a man short as AJ Boardman was sent to sin bin just before the final hooter.
Hurricanes now have a three-week break to reflect on the first half of the campaign before they return to action against Rochdale on Sunday, July 3 with kick-off at 3pm at Portway.
