Young Nathan collects hats for the homeless

A BALSALL COMMON youngster has set out this New Year to warm hearts – and heads.

Nathan Wilson, in Year 5 at Balsall Common Primary School, has reprised his campaign to collect hats for homeless people in the Solihull area.

He asks those who can donate hats, scarves, big socks or snacks to drop them off at his school, along with snacks and long life drinks.

Nine-year-old Nathan, who has autism, will then personally take his care packages to homeless people left out in the cold, at the end of January.

Nathan’s mum Sarah Wilson told the Observer: “His campaign started three years ago, we managed to get out in Coventry to deliver hats to the homeless. We had been out to the theatre in Wolverhampton, and when we came out from the theatre Nathan met a homeless man and he asked him why he was out in the cold, why they wouldn’t let him in to somewhere warm.

“So he contacted his school and he got 50 hats and he delivered them all. Then last Christmas he decided to do it again, and received 200 hats, so this year we will do it again but after Christmas, as a lot of homeless said they struggle more when people are less generous in January.

“Nathan just wants to help others, he won the Harry’s Young Star Award, but he personally can’t understand why he needs an award as he doesn’t want to make it a big thing.

“Everyone at Balsall Common school have been really good with the hat collection, which we are running for a couple of weeks.

Then we will take the packages to Coventry, Leamington and Solihull, any extra we take to the Salvation Army. He always likes to sit and chat with the people he helps and they appreciate him spending time and asking direct questions.”
