Warwick Folk Festival moving to new site this summer

Solihull Editorial 8th Jan, 2020   0

WARWICK Folk Festival is on the move.

The festival, one of Britain’s biggest roots music events, will switch this summer from its main site of many years at Warwick School to nearby Castle Park. It will be sited in the overflow car park field on the banks of the Avon next to the castle’s glamping and lodges site. Access for cars will be via the castle’s Stratford Road entrance.

The move has been prompted by a lack of space for camping at the school following development work after King’s High School moved to the site.

The 41st festival and first at its new home will run from July 23 to 26.

Around 30,000 music fans from across the world attended the festival last year providing a major economic boost to the town – estimated to be worth more than £500,000.

Organisers have confirmed the festival’s strong links with the town centre will continue. Music and dance sessions and open air concerts will continue to be held away from the main site at venues across the town during the four days of the festival. Smith Street will also be closed to traffic on the Saturday to allow for music and dancing and stalls to set up.

Shuttle buses will run regularly from the main site to the town centre, byt festival-goers will also be able to walk into town via

the path through the castle car park leading to the main castle entrance.

Harmonica virtuoso and Warwick resident Will Pound will be among those performing.

Will, who is also a festival patron, told the Observer: “We have a committed team that can’t wait to provide the same warm and open welcome to local friends old and new.

“You can expect the same great line ups, performance, dance, workshops and children’s events and great atmosphere, all in a new beautiful setting and even closer to the castle.”

Festival director Dick Dixon was equally excited at the move as the festival entered its fifth decade.

He said “We can’t wait to welcome our festival-goers for another great year and in such an exciting location with beautiful views across the Avon.

“The festival has something for everyone – superb music, workshops, singing, dancing, sessions and giggles galore at what is one of the friendliest and established folk festivals around.”

Among the big name acts taking to the Castle Park stage will be the multi-award winning and Warwick favourites Show of Hands, Canada’s Le Vent du Nord, three-time BBC 2 Folk Award-winning trio The Young’uns, together with other well known names including Nancy Kerr and Seth Lakeman.
