THE GREENS at Leamington’s Victoria Park are once again hosting top class bowls.

The National Bowls Championship – both men’s and women’s – are taking place throughout August.

Some 30,000 players and spectators are expected to attend the championships and more than 30 national titles will be up for grabs.

And some of those competing in the annual championships will also be hoping to return to Leamington in 2022 to compete for their country when Victoria Park plays host to the Commonwealth Games bowls competition.

Warwick District Council’s Commonwealth Games project team kicked off an annual ‘Countdown Celebration’ in Warwick on July 27.

Events, involving sporting, arts and cultural activities, will continue each July 27 – the day when the opening ceremony of the Birmingham Games will take place in 2022. The celebration day will be rotated across the district with Warwick followed next year by Whitnash, then Kenilworth, and finally Leamington to mark the opening of the games.

The Victoria Park greens are the only ones to have hosted two Women’s World Bowls Championships – in 1996 and 2004. The district council-cared for bowling complex has also hosted many international test matches.

Entry to watch is free.
