Songwriter helping people find their inner rhythm

A SONGWRITER from Kenilworth is striving to help people find their inner rhythm.

Keith Ayling recently gave a talk on songwriting and creativity to a sold out audience at Leamington Assembly. He was speaking at a TEDx event – the non-profit organisation devoted to ‘Ideas Worth Spreading’. His 18 minute talk can now be watched on the TEDx channel on You Tube.

Keith, a professional songwriter who has released 14 albums and performed worldwide, said: “There were a number of speakers, both local and international, all of whom had a story to tell and the whole event was hinged around the theme of rhythm.

“I’ve been speaking on songwriting for quite a few years now, and this was the perfect platform to connect to a wider audience. The reaction was incredible.

“The talk focuses on getting people to use my method to tell their story and in the centre of the talk I write a song with the audience live onstage. It works every time and the look on people’s faces when they realise what has just happened is beautiful.

“Many positive comments included teachers from Warwick School who would love me to speak to their students.”

“Everyone has the power to be creative. In whatever field of life we find ourselves in, we can use techniques to increase our creativity and even manufacture creativity when inspiration feels distant.”

Keith works for Leeds College of Music as a lecturer in songwriting as well as touring and speaking at schools nationwide.

And last year he launched an evening in Kenilworth called Song Club and hopes in the near future to run more programmes teaching young people how to write songs.

“I started when I was 15 years-old and it changed my life. Having a focus and a skill to be able to tell your own story has a massive impact on your growth as a young person.

“As a local volunteer youth leader I’m aware that Kenilworth is looking at its youth provision and for me, songwriting gave me a fantastic platform that became my career.”

Kimberley Owen, who organised the TEDx event in Leamington, said it had been a great success.

She added: “Rhythm is essential to life and that’s what makes this theme so diverse – from the beat of our hearts, to the beat of our daily commute. Consider the algorithms of our online data or even the pace of your work day, right through to your favourite songs – it’s everywhere.”
