Solihull nature event returns

Solihull Editorial 24th Sep, 2023   0

A SOLIHULL nature event is once again returning to Elmdon Nature Park in October

Starting on October 4, the four-day event, which focuses on local woodlands and wildlife, supports the sustainable management of council-owned woodlands.

During the first three days, groups of local school children will learn more about the environment.

At the end of the week, on Saturday October 7, Oaks and Shires opens to the public.

Meeting near Elmdon Church (B92 9EJ), there will be plenty to entertain local families, including birds of prey, willow weaving, free face painting sessions and much more.

Visitors will also see a heavy horse at work dragging timber out of the woodland whilst minimising damage to plants, a method known as horse-logging.

In addition, craft activities for children, a campfire for toasting marshmallows and a stall run by Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, means there’s something for everyone.

Coun Andy Mackiewicz, cabinet member for climate change, planning and housing, said: “The Oaks and Shires event is a great opportunity for families to learn more about our natural environment, its wildlife and the importance of looking after our woodland habitats.

“Managing forests sustainably helps restore biodiversity and increase our resilience to climate change. The variety of activities taking place will help kickstart an interest in the natural world for all those children who take part.”
