Residents launch petition to end parking difficulties

Solihull Editorial 5th Jun, 2024   0

NEAR MISSES, prams and wheelchairs having to use the road and restricting when to go shopping.

These are just some of the things residents on Caldwell Grove say they face every day due to non-residents parking up the road.

A petition has been launched by the residents calling on Solihull Council and West Midlands Police to address the parking issues occurring in the street.

On entry to the road there is a Police notice stating ‘Parking For Residents Only’ – but those who live there say it is ignored by motorists.

According to residents they have suffered verbal abuse and one on occasion a cyclist was left with injuries.

Resident Carol Baker said: “Some days I am unable to go out due to cars parked on the pavement as I am unable to navigate my wheelchair around them.

“My daughter often has to park round the corner or further down the road.

“Before now I’ve had to go in the road to get round a car parked on the pavement to incoming traffic by the church.”

Another resident said their daughter had nearly been hit while crossing the road.

June Doyle said: “I leave my house for work at 7am and am faced with the frustration of not being able to leave the Grove to get to work on time due to people parking.

“Cars queuing up to park their cars or placing their work tools in the road so I can’t get past.

“If I ask them if they can move to let me out, I just get verbal abuse.

“They have no respect for the fact that the have taken over this Grove and are causing problems for the residents, Also, the have driven past signs that tell them its residents only area, which they choose to ignore.

“The park half on the curb preventing wheelchair access down the road, and parents with small children must go out in to the road as the pavement is unpassable due to parked cars.”

Another said he had to stop going shopping on a Sunday as when he returned there was no where to park on the Grove.

A Solihull Council spokesperson said: “Caldwell Grove is subject to a Traffic Order that restricts motor vehicles from driving into this residential street unless they are accessing property there, due to the very limited off-street parking space.

“If residents would like to the current traffic management system to be reviewed, they need to contact the Council’s Highway Management team. Alternatively, the responsibility for enforcing the existing traffic order sits with West Midlands Police.

“The Council receives a large number of requests for new or amended parking/traffic restrictions and these requests are reviewed annually every November ready for the following financial year’s work programme. This location does not currently feature in the Council approved traffic order programme for the 2024/25 financial year.”

West Midlands Police said: “We are aware of concerns around parking in the area and are continuing our patrols across Lyndon, Elmdon, Olton and Silhill.

“We continue to work closely with our partners from the council around these issues and will take appropriate action where necessary.

“Anyone who experiences issues with illegal parking can contact us via 101 or Live Chat.”
