On target at Warwick Castle for UK's first medieval archery festival

ARCHERS have been practicing for the UK’s first medieval archery festival taking place at Warwick Castle over half term.

Team GB archer and Olympic hopeful Tom Hall took on castle bowman Lewis Copson, in a display of focus and skill, comparing styles from across the ages.

Tom showcased his accuracy using a recurve bow – a bow with limbs that curve away from the archer when unstrung – while Lewis opted for a traditional wooden bow.

Lewis was able to demonstrate the impressive distances achieved by medieval bows compared to the 70 metre distance of modern target archery.

The bowman has been practicing the art at the castle for over ten years and will be leading a group for the festival where visitors can enjoy demonstrations and displays.

Tom – who studied the art at Warwick University – also tried his hand at longbowmanship which he said had more in common with modern archery.

He added: ” Trying it out somewhere like Warwick Castle is a great way to see whether you like it. I’d encourage anyone to give it a go and experience how satisfying it is.”

The festival takes place from today to February 15. Entry is included with a standard ticket although there will be an additional fee for those who want to test out their archery skills.
