Myton Hospice prepares to reopen Warwick inpatient unit

Solihull Editorial 18th Sep, 2020   0

MYTON Hospice is preparing to reopen its Warwick inpatient unit.

The charity temporarily closed the site six months ago due to staff shortages and moved all patients to Coventry.

Its Myton Lane unit was then offered to Warwick Hospital to support the local response to the pandemic.

But earlier this month South Warwickshire Foundation Trust left and preparations have now begun to reopen the building.

Patients will be accepted from Tuesday September 29 after time is spent bringing the facility in line with government guidelines.

Initially eight beds will be reopened to allow time for new staff to be trained and existing staff to adapt to any new measures. The charity hopes to increase its capacity to 12 beds, and will eventually reopen all 16 beds in Warwick early next year, alongside 16 beds at its Coventry site.

Charity chief executive Ruth Freeman said: “Demand for our inpatient beds has remained high during the coronavirus pandemic, we have also seen a marked increase in demand for our Myton at Home service and have supported more than 500 patients remotely. As the only provider of inpatient beds across Coventry and Warwickshire we have a responsibility to protect them, for the sake of the people with life limiting and terminal illnesses who need us.

“We are very excited to be preparing to reopen our Warwick unit. We have operated from there since Myton was established in 1982 and it has been very odd not to have been providing beds here for the last six months. Our staff and volunteers have been amazing and been happy to go over and above and support wherever they can but those whose base is in Warwick are really looking forward to welcoming patients back on site.”
