Hair-raising Chinese Crested dogs hoping to be mane event in new home

A HAIR-raising pair are hoping to become the ‘mane’ attraction in a new home.

Four-year-old Chinese Crested duo Rocky and Echo were taken to Kenilworth Dogs Trust in February when their owner was unable to care for them.

But staff at the shelter think the pair’s quirky appearance means they are being overlooked.

They are now appealing to potential owners to think about rehoming the dogs, who are best friends and would prefer to be homed together. They need to live in a home without other pets and can live with teenagers over the age 14.

Manager Emma Healey said: “Chinese Cresteds do have an unusual appearance but we’ve never seen any with hair like these two. They are very attached to each other, so we are looking for a family to rehome them both together.

“Echo is the more confident of the pair and Rocky looks to him for reassurance. Despite their crazy hair, we think they are adorable and really hope they find a loving family soon.”

The charity says it is concerned Chinese Crested dogs are falling victim to a trend which sees influxes of specific breeds in its kennels – more commonly affecting dogs such as Huskies and Staffordshire Bull Terriers. The cause is often due to irresponsible purchasing, lack of understanding of a breed’s needs, or a change in family circumstances.

Historically Chinese Crested dogs have not been part of this trend – with just one of the dogs handed in ten years ago.

But in the past three years the charity has taken in nearly 40 of the dogs.

Emma added: “We often see an abundance of specific breeds coming into Dogs Trust and its sad to think this may now have fallen on Chinese Cresteds. We have seen a few more Chinese Cresteds than usual coming into our care and have taken in three in the last few months alone at our Kenilworth centre.

“Rocky and Echo are wonderful dogs and we’re really hoping someone will come forward and adopt this adorable duo really soon.”
