ENGLAND’S World Cup heroes returned to Birmingham Airport from Russia following their thrilling run to fourth place.
The 23-man-squad touched down at the airport from Saint Petersburg yesterday (July 15) after treating the nation to its first male World Cup semi-final since 1990.
The FA came to a decision they would not arrange an official ‘homecoming’ and therefore people were not invited to greet the team on arrival.
The team suffered heartbreak last Wednesday (July 11) in their extra-time loss to Croatia and a loss against Belgium in the third-place play-off.
But when they flew from Birmingham to Moscow last month, hardly anybody would have predicted coming so close to the nation’s first World Cup Final since England triumphed in 1966.
Birmingham Airport tweeted on Saturday: “We haven’t made the decision to not arrange a homecoming.
“We’re handling the flight as the FA asked and the area of the airport doesn’t lend itself to a viewing area.
“We understand you want to welcome the team but you’ll not be able to see them.
“We ask you not to come to the site.”
