Calls for urgent action to cut accidents on busy road

Solihull Editorial 28th Feb, 2020   0

URGENT action is being called for to cut accidents on a busy Warwickshire road.

The A4189, which runs from Warwick towards and through Henley and onwards to Redditch, is 43rd on Warwickshire County Council’s list for highway safety priorities despite concerns over speeding and accidents on the 50mph road.

Over the past three years there have been 25 crashes along the road – including two fatal.

Speeding is believed to have directly contributed to three of the accidents and two where drivers were potentially going too fast for the weather conditions.

Residents, who recently met with highways officers and Stratford MP Nadhim Zahawi to voice their concerns, feared nothing would be done over the lack of safety measures.

County councillor John Horner said: “Residents spoke of fatal accidents occurring outside their front doors and excessive speeds due to little of no enforcement.

“The high level of concern by residents and their total feeling of frustration with Warwickshire County Council at the lack of any safety works or speed control measures for A4189/A3400 was very obvious.

“The officer present quoted a figure of £350,000 for all road safety measures across the county and said A4189 was 43rd on the priority list and so nothing would be done.”

Officers also heard about concerns over the construction of an Amazon warehouse and a Stobart depot at the new industrial park in nearby Redditch.

Residents fear lorries will use the road after coming off the M40 motorway to which Mr Zahawi said he would push for congestion charging through Henley to discourage HGV and vans using it as a ‘rat run’.

Following the meeting, Mr Zahawi also agreed to pressure the county council to allow funding from elsewhere to pay for average speed cameras and the renovation of a speed camera at Outhill.
