Brexit appeal to Guy Fawkes raises smile in Warwickshire village

BREXIT may be getting wearisome for many but it has not dented the humour of one Warwickshire householder.

Britain’s attempt to leave the EU hit another stumbling block yesterday when Commons Speaker John Bercow ruled the government could not have a third vote on Theresa May’s deal unless there was a substantial change to the deal which was heavily defeated last week.

Mr Bercow cited a convention dating back to 1604 which stated a defeated motion could not be brought back in the same form during the course of a parliamentary session.

In Brexit despair a resident in Dunchurch near Rugby has called for a little help to sort out the mess from a man who was around at the time of the citation Mr Bercow made reference to, and who had some experience of parliamentary matters himself.

‘Come back Guy Fawkes your country needs you!’ proclaims a banner across the front of a village home.

The failed plotters of 1605 did have strong links to Warwickshire, including Dunchurch, having met in the Old Lion pub, which is now a private home known as Guy Fawkes’ House.
