Awareness raised about 'debilitating' ME illness at 'Millions Missing' event

THOSE who are ‘missing’ from everyday life across Warwickshire and Solihull were represented at a global awareness-raising event.

Members of support groups for those with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, also known as or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, were represented by friends, family and supporters wearing red tshirts at a rally in Birmingham.

It was part of a worldwide event called ‘Millions Missing’.

And the nearest rally saw those affected by the illness write down what they miss doing, or would be able to do if they were healthy. The note is then strapped to a pair of shoes to represent the individual.

One of those who went to the event to represent those from the Warwickshire group was Roz Kenderdine. She said: “Attending Millions Missing and seeing a small sea of red t-shirts was an unforgettable experience.

“There could be no denying this illness affects so many people as row upon row of empty shoes with name tags of the person too poorly to be there took centre stage. The people they belong to virtually taking part of an awareness event knowing they were no longer invisible and no longer ignored.

“There was a real sense of community for a group of people whose lives have been changed by illness that so few people are aware of.

“It was a day where ME could not be overlooked and I witnessed a group of really poorly people working so hard to say they are part of the Millions Missing.”
