Art project reimagines Romeo and Juliet based on recollections

ROMEO and Juliet has been reimagined at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage.

Artist Thor McIntyre, with support from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust (SBT), has created the installation Threads of the Unsaid based on people’s recollections on the tale of the star-crossed lovers.

Visitors to the home of Shakespeare’s wife can walk through a tunnel woven among the trees and read and listen to others’ memories of the play.

Visitors also have the chance to record their own memories in a salon-style hair dryer.

Thor, who worked on the project for around seven months, said: “I was struck by how Romeo and Juliet is a story everyone knows in some fashion, even if they have never seen it.

“So I became intrigued by the idea that we could crowd-script a version of Romeo and Juliet, creating a new version of the play drawn together from thousands of little fragments and moments people remember about the play.”

Thor also used documents and notes from the SBT archive to add the voices of those backstage during various productions of the play.

He added: “Not only are you surrounded by people’s inputs to the crowd-script, you will also discover and hear little snippets from behind the scenes and backstage, some of which are really quite hilarious.”

The pathway of written tags will continue to grow and evolve over the summer as visitors add their recollections, and Twitter users can also contribute their ideas online via the hashtag #GiveaScript.

September 1 will mark the project finale when visitors will be able to meet the artist and enjoy activities including painting and live poetry.
