Talking history at Warwick Words

Solihull Editorial 21st Sep, 2018   0

KINGS and queens, prime ministers and presidents, soldiers and shopkeepers, and many more will find themselves under scrutiny in Warwick this autumn.

The Warwick Words History Festival, running from October 1 to 7, will celebrate historical writing, fact and fiction in the company of some well-known faces.

Festival guests include former Daily Telegraph editor Max Hastings; best-selling author Alison Weir; historian and television presenter Kate Williams; botanist and broadcaster Stefan Buczacki; historian and literary biographer Juliet Barker; historian and professor of American literature Sarah Churchwell; historian, broadcaster and novelist Saul David; and cultural historian Fern Riddell.

Events run throughout the day and include talks, walks and debates at various venues in the town.

The historical microscope will be turned on topics from across the world, but will also be focused on yesteryear Warwick and the county of Warwickshire.

The festival’s local history project continues the theme of In and Around Warwick, and includes a Warwick Armistice Afternoon Tea in association with Unlocking Warwick.

And the festival will also be presenting a new series of Tea Time Talks, in association with The University of Warwick, from October 27 to November 24.

Festival director Helen Meeke said: “This is the third Warwick Words History Festival – our focus on history has had an excellent response and we are sure that this year’s festival will be another success.

“We are most grateful to everyone whose support makes the festival possible and we look forward to welcoming you to Warwick in 2018.

“Look out, too for our History Extra Events in November when we welcome Tracy Borman and Dan Snow. Tickets are already on sale – make sure you book early to avoid disappointment.”
