Matilda the Musical top of the class at Birmingham Hippdrome

THE ROYAL Shakespeare Company’s award-winning Matilda takes the Hippodrome straight to the top of the class.

Inspired by the incomparable Roald Dahl’s beloved book, the musical is a triumph of catchy tunes, humour and impressive set design.

The show, which is running in Birmingham until Saturday September 8, is a riotous night out for the family, with children and adults alike engrossed in the show from start to finish.

The musical tells the tale of extraordinary five-year-old Matilda Wormwood, born to parents who did not want her and cannot understand why she would rather read Dostoyevsky than watch tv.

The humour Dahl is so well-known for contrasts beautifully with darker themes such as rejection, loss and fear. This is never more apparent than in scenes with Mrs Trunchbull, played effortlessly by the Amazonian-statuesque Craige Els, who portrayed the cruel headteacher – and former Olympic hammer-throwing gold medallist – with sinister hilarity and grace.

But the youngster’s luck is about to change when she meets the kind-hearted but unconfident Miss Honey who believes Matilda’s talents should be nurtured.

The musical is written by Dennis Kelly, with music by Tim Minchin – and any fans of the Australian comedian will recognise his style in the hilarious lyrics and off-the-wall score.

The musical was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and premiered at the RSC’s The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford in November 2010, before transferring to London’s West End in October 2011, where it opened to rave reviews.
