Birmingham's Crescent Theatre unveils its next season of shows

Solihull Editorial 8th May, 2022   0

THE BIG THREE theatres in Birmingham cater for three different types of theatre goers – The Hippodrome brings the big name West End and Broadway shows into town, The Alexandra brings in mostly popular tours with soap star studded casts and The REP prides itself in diversity and aims for the intelligentsia audiences.

The fourth city centre theatre is The Crescent, based in Brindley Place with its own resident company putting on a programme that strives to offer something different to the other three.

At a press launch it announced the first half of its new season from September 22 through to March 23 and there are some real gems for theatregoers to put in their diaries.

September 17 to 24 sees a witty musical about modern love called ‘I love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change’. This is from the clever pen of Joe DiPietro who wrote the fabulous ‘What’s New Pussycat’ and the wacky ‘Toxic Avenger’.

Also in September (24 to October 1) is a stage version of the classic film ‘Shakespeare In Love’ – a comedy by Tom Stoppard about the complicated love life of the cheeky chappie wordsmith from Stratford.

A gritty piece about the Yorkshire Ripper is set for the studio from October 22 to 29 entitled ‘There Are No Beginnings’ by Charley Miles. If you like you’re theatre dark, moody and meaningful then this is a must.

From November 12 to 19, there will be a new staging of the Webster classic ‘The Duchess of Malfi.

December brings Hans Christian Andersen’s ‘The Snow Queen’ from October 6 to 17 – essentially Frozen without ‘that song’ and also a magical Christmas treat with their famous annual ‘Wassail’.

There is more delicious darkness in January with ‘The Marcy Seat’ by Neil LaButte – a different take on twin Towers 9/11 – that’s in the studio from January 21 to 28.

And there is more grit from February 11 to 18 – Shelagh Delaney’s working class epic ‘A Taste Of Honey’ and finally finishing off the first half with the thriller ‘A Girl On The Train’

Challenging, entertaining and thought provoking stuff in my opinion and I’m looking forward to reviewing as much as I can – let’s keep theatre live folks
