HISTORY repeated itself at Hockley Heath Cricket Club who were defeated during a special 150th anniversary fixture.

The Grove Lane club welcomed Henley-in-Arden C.C to commemorate the first recorded game played by the home club back in 1874.

That original contest was won by Henley who scored 55 and then bowled Hockley out for just 33.

Seeking revenge 150 years later, Hockley Heath batted first in a 35 overs a side game.

They were led by Chris Freeman while Henley were captained by Peter Johnson.

Hockley overcame the handicap of having only ten players due to a last minute drop out with the score 183-9.

In reply to Hockley’s challenging total, Henley came out with all guns blazing.

In just 30 overs, they reached 187-6. R. Rebelo scored 103 not out, backed up by J. Bramwell (22) and R. Butler (21).

Following on from his half century, B. Akbar took one wicket and two fine catches in the deep.

Dave Bullivant from Hockley Heath CC said: “The result might have been closer had two Hockley players not left the field with a few overs to go.

“So, there it is – Hockley Heath second best again. Maybe there will be another commemorative event in 150 years’ time when they will finally gain revenge for that 1874 defeat.

“Despite the showery weather the players all enjoyed taking part in such a special match and played at a beautiful ground that was in immaculate condition.”
