Westminster Diary - Community spirit shines through summer of two tales

Solihull Editorial 24th Aug, 2024   0

As we approach the end of summer, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on recent events and offer my thoughts on how our community can move forward.

Firstly, I want to congratulate all the British athletes who took part in the Olympic games this summer. It was amazing to witness such extraordinary British success, exemplifying the best of this nation and how we can achieve excellence on the global stage. I thoroughly enjoyed watching and I am looking forward to cheering Great Britain on in the Paralympic games.

I know that following the tragedy that took place in Southport all our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those young girls. It was in the wake of this that we witnessed the violent disorder that took place across the nation. I want to mention the exemplary actions of our Police who have worked tirelessly during this time to protect our communities and keep everyone safe. In the Solihull borough, we witnessed gatherings on August 4, that were dealt with promptly and professionally by Solihull Police. I am in regular contact with the police and we all owe them our sincere gratitude for continuing to place themselves in harm’s way to protect us all. Their courage and dedication should be commended, and I am ever grateful for their bravery in the face of adversity.

It would be remiss not to mention the wonderful scenes of community spirit that have been on display across the country in the wake of these violent riots. From organised clean-ups to individuals reaching out to people from targeted communities to check-in. The sense of togetherness has been truly uplifting. I was particularly proud to see the response of the Solihull community who came together to reject the rhetoric of the division.

I was incredibly disappointed to learn that the new Labour government have scrapped the winter fuel allowance, stripping millions of pensioners across the country of a lifeline despite rising fuel costs this winter. That is why I have joined the Express’campaign to reinstate the winter fuel allowance. It is simply unconscionable to remove this payment from pensioners, leaving many without the ability to turn their central heating on during the colder months. I have always advocated on issues important tothe elderly community within my constituency and I will continue to fight for all pensioners to retire with dignity.

Finally, I hope you and your loved ones have enjoyed a fun and safe summer!
