A SOLIHULL school has marked Chinese New Year with a range of celebrations.

Lyndon School has a significant Cantonese community and has made huge efforts in recent years to help them celebrate this important event in their calendar.

Mr Abid Butt, the principal at Lyndon School presented all the learners who celebrate Chinese New Year with a red envelope with a special message, good luck coins and some chocolate coins on Friday February 9 ahead of the main event

The school canteen also put on a delicious festive menu with a range of Cantonese dishes on offer, alongside giant spring rolls and pineapple fritters.

Chinese New Year is an annual 15-day festival in China and Chinese communities around the world that begins with the new moon that occurs sometime between January 21 and February 20, with festivities lasting until the following full moon.

The holiday is sometimes called the Lunar New Year because the dates of celebration follow the phases of the moon. This year is the year of the dragon.

Abid Butt, Principal at Lyndon School said: “I believe our school is strengthened through our diverse community and that it is so important to celebrate the different cultures of all our learners.

“It was great to mark Chinese New Year at Lyndon and I hope everyone celebrating over the coming weeks has a fabulous time!”
