POLITICAL issues went under the microscope when students quizzed Solihull’s leaders.

A borough version of BBC’s Question Time was chaired by the Mayor, Councillor Diana Holl-Allen as part of the annual Local Democracy Week which looks to promote democratic engagement at a local level.

Along with the Mayor, the panel also included councillors from three local political parties.

In attendance were Conservative Councillor Ken Hawkins, Green Party Councillor Bernie Donnelly, Liberal Democrat Councillor Richard Long and Lee Jamieson the vice principal at Solihull College and University Centre.

Over 30 students from Arden Academy, Solihull College and University Centre, and Solihull Sixth Form College attended the event.

The panel faced questions on topics including democratic engagement in young people, the green agenda and HS2.

The Mayor said: “It was a fantastic opportunity for young people to engage with political representatives to address concerns that they have. It was great to see such a vibrant, engaged group of students, who are passionate about political issues.

“It’s important for everyone to discuss political topics and have an open space to express and question members of local government.”
