THE CHILL in the air, the darker nights, and the scent of pumpkin spice in the breeze can only mean one thing – the autumn season is upon us.
And with it comes the launch of West Midlands Police’s Mischief Fortnight campaign which aims to keep communities safe during the darker nights.
It’s a two-week period that often sees an unfortunate uptick in burglaries, anti-social behaviour, fireworks misuse, and nuisance callers.
This year, it began on October 22 and runs through to November 5.
As residents get ready for Halloween and Bonfire Night, the force have some important updates to ensure a safe and secure seasonal period.
Anyone not keen on being spooked by unwanted callers, are being urged to place “No trick or treaters” cards in your windows – which can be downloaded and printed at home on the police’s website.
Halloween is a time for fun and festivities, but it’s important to remember that not everyone wants to take part in this event.
West Midlands Police have given some essential tips to ensure a safe and respectful night for all:
• If you plan to go trick or treating, make sure you have a trusted adult accompany you.
• Don’t knock if there’s a sign saying ‘No trick or treaters’
• Be careful not to frighten elderly or vulnerable people.
• Don’t go trick or treating alone – stay with your group.
• Only visit areas where there are streetlights.
• Don’t throw eggs and flour.
• Be careful crossing roads in the dark.
