The collision between a car transporter and a van happened on the northbound carriageway just after J6 for Birmingham Airport at around 1.40pm on Tuesday (July 25).

West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) said the woman – a passenger in the van – was extricated from the vehicle by fire crews being being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for further treatment.

The driver of the van, a man, was assessed and treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being taken by land ambulance to the same hospital.

West Midlands Police said the car transporter driver was checked over the at the scene but did not need to go to hospital.

The southbound carriage was closed to allow the Midlands Air Ambulance to land at scene.

And the northbound carriage was closed for around five hours while work was carried out.

The Police are now appealing for information and to hear from any witnesses.

Det Sgt Paul Hughes from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “I’m really keen to hear from any witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage.

“In particular, I’m trying to identify the driver of a blue articulated HGV curtainside trailer which was in lane one just in front of the vehicles involved when the collision occurred.

“This person could be a key witness.”
